Pilot Almost Crashes Plane While Texting (Mobiledia)
Distracted driving is a well-documented epidemic, but now the risks extend to
texting while flying.
An Australian pilot aborted a landing just 150 meters from the ground after a
text message distracted him, demonstrating how unchecked mobile phone use can
turn even the friendly skies dangerous.
The pilot forgot to lower the landing wheels in time, and the investigators
reported he was fiddling with his phone instead of making adjustments. The
crew realized the mistake before trying to land, and had to cancel the
original landing in Singapore and go back into the air.
The airline, Jetstar, already instructs passengers to turn off their
electronic devices before taking flight, and now has a special announcement
reminding pilots to do the same.
Most people are aware of the dangers of texting and driving, and professional
pilots know particularly to stay off their phones and focus on the task at
hand -- especially since the stakes are considerably higher, with hundreds of
people in a several-ton craft flying thousands of feet in the air.
The pilot's behavior defied common sense but fit perfectly with the trend
towards constant connection. Mobile phones are an essential part of modern
